Kuna Tavalin is the Policy Director at Washington Partners. Currently, she works with several national home-visiting organizations along with focusing on issues that pertain to students with disabilities and general birth-through-12 education issues. Kuna began her career on Capitol Hill, where she worked for Senator Jim Jeffords of Vermont, her home state, and Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio. She worked on a wide range of issues including education and early childhood issues, foster care and adoption, transportation, housing, hunger and other issues.
From the Senate, Kuna moved to the National Disability Rights Network where she was a Public Policy Analyst focusing on issues including special education, housing and veterans affairs. She also worked in a rural school district in Central Massachusetts for a year and a half, where she was certified in middle school humanities, and she consulted for a start-up non-profit in Suburban Boston that connects at-risk teens with job skills.
Throughout her career Kuna has dedicated much of her free time as a tutor. She worked with Everybody Wins! Washington, DC students for seven years and is currently tutoring with For Love of Children.
Kuna holds a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish Literature and Politics from Brandeis University and a M.A. in Teaching from Smith College, where she was a Project Coach Fellow, teaching at-risk youth in Springfield, MA’s North End to coach and stay engaged in school.
